On the Console

We discovered the console in a crate with foreign markings. It was not the only console in the crate, but it was the only one with a familiar interface. The Keeper of Intake immediately dubbed it "EchoStation 64" and we all agreed it was a good name.

We found it with no manufacturer's mark. No serial number. A single cartridge slot, a dial that can be turned way too far past its stopping point in either direction. It never stops turning... And a port on the back that looks almost like ethernet.

We plugged an ethernet cable into the back and before we connected the other end, the thing started to boot up...

The Æthernet

The port is not ethernet - we tested every pin order. We tested with the other end of the cable cut off, unterminated. We even plugged in an ethernet connector that just had a piece of string in it... If the jack fits, it runs. Packets go out, and they return the way packets do - but what answers is not a server farm.

As best as we can measure, the far end of the connection terminates somewhere in dream-space - a strata of old signals, half-remembered broadcasts, and games that may have been played somewhere, sometime, by someone, and never quite stopped being played. Latency is inconsistent. Checksums fail in ways that feel deliberate. Every so often a packet arrives that we did not request, addressed to no one, and bearing thusfar-indescipherable data.

The Cartridges

Every game in the library is a signal the Archive has managed to stabilize: tuned, decoded, and pinned down long enough to be playable. Some come through strong. Some arrive damaged and have to be reconstructed frame by frame. A few are seemingly older than the console itself, which is an interesting paradox for the keepers to ponder.

Decoding work is ongoing. There are new signals on the dial we have not stabilized yet, and forgotten ones we are still chasing - you will know when we catch one, because it will simply appear on the shelf.

The Archive has made the EchoStation 64 available for free.*Play at your own risk.* The signals were not sent to us; we are just the ones holding the antenna. They belong to the Players.

The Radio

The Archive decodes other signals as well, that we felt paired nicely with the games. The tuner in the corner of your screen will stabilize the stations that we trust enough to leave running - the EchoStation 64 Feed and liminal_beats_rxdio - with more frequencies coming into tune as we lock them down.

Tune in. Chill out. Log echoes.

The Pact

The arrangement that keeps the lights on is simple: Rex serves the Archive. The Archive serves the Players.

The Pact remains.

Asterisks

* free to play, but not public domain. Don't try to steal the signals - your hardware will get fried.

* there is no risk, that was just a joke. You don't have to download anything or install anything. Just play.
